Saying "I treat everyone the same because love is love" is not as inclusive as we were taught

Saying “we treat everyone the same” usually comes from a good place.

It means:

  • You respect every couple.
  • You believe every relationship deserves care.
  • You don't want to treat LGBTQ+ couples as unusual, difficult, or separate.

But in the wedding industry, “the same” often means treating every client with the same systems, scripts, poses, family assumptions, and traditions that were built around straight, cisgender couples.

Many of us were trained inside systems that assumed every couple would be a bride and groom, every couple would follow the same gender roles, and every wedding day would follow a similar set of traditions.

This isn't anyone's fault. Wedding photography education has been built around cisgender and heterosexual norms for decades.

While we can't change how the industry taught us, we can choose what we carry forward into our businesses and client interactions.

As LGBTQ+ friendly wedding photographers, we have a responsibility to keep learning. That includes noticing the straight and cisgender defaults we inherited from the wedding industry and replacing them with practices that help queer couples feel respected, understood, and affirmed in every interaction with us.

The issue that's left is where we can turn to learn queer-informed wedding photography.

We don't want to ask our LGBTQ+ clients (and we shouldn't, since they didn't pay to educate us), and there isn't a formalized place where we can learn to do better for ourselves and our couples.

Which is probably the exact conundrum that brought you to this page...

Course overview

MODULE 1

INTRODUCTION

The course begins by exploring the gaps that still exist in the wedding photography industry and why LGBTQ+ couples need photographers who know how to create a more affirming client experience.

MODULE 2

INTRODUCTION TO QUEERNESS

In this module, you'll learn foundational knowledge about queerness and understand key concepts across the LGBTQ+ community. You’ll gain a clearer understanding of language, identity, lived experience, and the diversity within queer communities so you can approach your work with greater awareness.

MODULE 3

WORKING WITH QUEER CLIENTS

In module 3, you'll shift from general knowledge into the client relationship itself. You'll explore how to build a client-led process by asking better questions, honoring each couple’s language and boundaries, and shaping the experience around what makes them feel comfortable and understood.

MODULE 4

QUEER-AFFIRMING POSING AND PROMPTING

In this module, you'll learn to create posing and prompting experiences that feel affirming, collaborative, and safe for queer couples. You’ll learn how to move away from gendered assumptions, offer direction that respects each client’s comfort and expression, and guide couples in a way that reflects who they are rather than unintentionally putting them in cisnormative and heteronormative roles.

MODULE 5

THE WEDDING DAY EXPERIENCE

In this module, you’ll learn how to show up on the wedding day in a way that feels thoughtful, prepared, and affirming. You'll learn how to handle vendor interactions, family dynamics, group photos, and day-of communication so your queer clients feel comfortable, supported, and celebrated from start to finish of their wedding day.

MODULE 6

PORTFOLIO AND WEBSITE REPRESENTATION

Next, you'll learn how to build a more ethical portfolio and website that represents queer people with care rather than tokenizing them. You’ll learn how to choose images, write copy, and present your work in a way that feels honest, respectful, and aligned with your values.

MODULE 7

CONCLUSION AND REFLECTION

This final module brings the certification together and gives you a space to reflect on what you've learned. You’ll revisit the key ideas from the course, consider how they apply to your own photography process, and leave with a clearer sense of how to serve queer couples with more intention, accountability, and care in a way that feels good for your business.

KATELYN SERVEDIO

Hello! I'm Katelyn. I'm an LGBTQ+ luxury wedding and elopement photographer, educator, community builder, and advocate based in Portland, Oregon. As a queer person myself, my work is rooted in the belief that LGBTQ+ people deserve more than tolerance. We deserve to be fully celebrated, protected, and represented.

Over the years, I've poured myself into teaching photographers and vendors inclusivity within the wedding industry. The majority of my clientele is LGBTQ+, giving me extensive firsthand experience serving queer couples and navigating the unique challenges they often face while planning weddings. My work has been featured internationally and published in publications including Dancing With Her, Rock n Roll Bride, Oregon Wedding Day, and Washington Wedding Day.

Beyond photography, I'm deeply committed to creating tangible change within the industry. I'm the founder of a 10,000-member LGBTQ+ wedding community that connects queer couples with affirming vendors, the creator of a queer-focused wedding magazine, and the host of Love Loud, an inclusivity-focused retreat dedicated to helping wedding photographers build safer and more welcoming businesses.

Through these things, I've been able to help hundreds of wedding vendors move beyond performative allyship and create experiences where LGBTQ+ couples feel genuinely seen, respected, and celebrated. My teaching combines lived experience, industry expertise, and actionable strategies that professionals can immediately implement within their own businesses.

My goal through everything I do is to help create a wedding industry where every person can walk into a space and know they belong, and I am so excited to offer this course to help wedding photographers contribute to making the wedding industry more affirming for queer couples.
